  • 2. “Our activity today is a game about place value – the houses where we group things. You will build four digit numbers and talk about the names of the groups in the different houses. What is the rule for how many groups in each house?” “There can only be 9 groups in the houses.” “The rule is the same for every house.
  • 3. “Can you help me build this number on our place value chart?” “ 7 ones in the ones house. “ 9 tens in the tens house.” “ 4 hundreds in the hundreds house.” “ 6 thousands in the thousands house.”
  • 4. Let’s read the place value chart together.” PIC MAB of 6497 “6 thousands 4 hundreds 9 tens and 7 ones.”
  • 5. Si “Another way of saying this is six thousand, four hundred and ninety-seven. These are the words we use when we are spelling the number.”
  • 6. “How do we write six thousand, four hundred and ninety-seven on a number expander?” Show number expander “ 6 in the thousands, 4 in the hundreds, 9 in the tens and 7 in the ones.”
  • 7. Show number expander “We read our number expander the same way as our place value chart.”
  • 8. “How many tens are in the number 6 thousands 4 hundreds 9 tens and 7 ones?” “ 649.” “Yes. Can you explain your answer?” “When we unfold the number expander to the tens house it shows 649 tens”.
  • 9. “We have 30 minutes to play the game. Your groups are written on the whiteboard. Each table has a gameboard set up ready for you.”
  • 10. “Listen to the rules. Take turns to throw the dice. Read the instructions carefully. Pick up a number card every turn. There are MAB, place value charts and number expanders to use. Help each other. Put your hand up if you need help.”
