The camp received a new member, LewisCorde, and we are pleased to welcome him into our ranks. George Winn and his musiciansprovided a wonderful bluegrass music performance which included a couple of songsdirectly from the War between the States. Attendance was very high was 23 members and 20guests.The Adjutant report showed that our checking account balance was at $2,054.60 with nooutstanding obligations. It was noted that the SCV Sesquicentennial Commemorations will be separate from theVirginia Sesquicentennial Commission. The state commission does not not want us involvedor included in their plannin   g or events marking the 4 years of bitter warfare. Their programis of a political nature that will, apparently, be free of any true historical accuracy orinsights. It is shaping up to be a 4 year slam of all things Confederate and Southern heritagewill be disparaged. Accordingly, the SCV is encouraging camps to provide observances atthe local level and other camps are encouraged to provide whatever support they can toensure the highest level of success. A number of counties, historical societies and other localorganizations throughout the state have planned events to mark their historic events in amanner giving due credence to real history and presenting educational opportunities. Oursupport will be most welcomed. Camp members are asked to attend and support thoseactivities.Respectfully submitted,Mike ThomasAdjutant/Treasurer    S S S O O O U U U T T T H H H E E E R R R N N N I I I L L L L L L U U U S S S T T T R R R  A  A  A T T T E E E D D D   January 2011 T T hheeOOf f f f i i cci i aallP P uubblli i ccaat t i i oonnOOf f T T hheeGGeenneer r aallRRoobbeer r t t E E LLeeeeccaamm p p##11558899OOf f T T hheeS Soonn s sOOf f C C oonnf f eeddeer r aat t eeV V eet t eer r aannMMi i ddlloot t hhi i aann , ,V V i i r r  g  g i i nni i aa   22   Camp News   It looks like the camp will have a booth at the Chesterfield County Fair in 2011. In the assault force was Junior Lieutenant Henry C. Britton of Company C, 9th Virginia Infantry. Crossing the no man's land to the enemy positions, Britton, the only officer available in his company, led his company through and to the rear of the positionwhile supporting units spread right & left. This splendidly coordinated assault resulted in a quick and total Confederate victory.A letter is in Lt. Britton's service record from his regimental commander to the Secretary of Warrecommending Lt. Britton for promotion to Captain of his company under the Valor and Skill Actof 1862 for his special gallant   ry and distinction on the night of November 17th instant . Theletter states that Britton captured a Yankee Colonel in hand to hand combat and led his menrapidly to the enemy rear surprising and securing almost the entire camp to his front. Besides theColonel, he personally captured two other officers. In all, the Yankees lost 5 officers and 112enlisted men captured plus another 63 killed or wounded. Pickett's assault force lost 1 man deadand 9 wounded. The Yankees initially admitted to a loss of about 40 but later admitted to more.Yankee records also report that hundreds of other troops were caught so off guard at thisunexpected and fierce attack, that they simply threw down their weapons and fled. The capturedUnion position was turned into a Confederate position including rifle pits and was never re-takenby the Yankees. The engagement took place in Chesterfield County. Lt. Britton and his men were fromChesterfield so this action would have been double sweet for them. Lt. Britton enlisted at age 22at the Chesterfield Court House and rose to the rank of First Sergeant before accepting acommission to 2nd Lt. He was WIA at Malvern Hill July 1, 1862 and captured at Gettysburgduring Pickett's Charge. Held as a POW at Johnson's Island he returned to his company after beingexchanged March 1864. Unfortunately, he was captured again April 1, 1865 at Five Forks and wasreturned to Johnson's Island until released June 18, 1865. At 6'5 tall, he was a conspicuous figurewith a service record reflecting courage & dedication .    S S S O O O U U U T T T H H H E E E R R R N N N I I I L L L L L L U U U S S S T T T R R R  A  A  A T T T E E E D D D   January 2011 T T hheeOOf f f f i i cci i aallP P uubblli i ccaat t i i oonnOOf f T T hheeGGeenneer r aallRRoobbeer r t t E E LLeeeeccaamm p p##11558899OOf f T T hheeS Soonn s sOOf f C C oonnf f eeddeer r aat t eeV V eet t eer r aannMMi i ddlloot t hhi i aann , ,V V i i r r  g  g i i nni i aa   44   Next Meeting Our next meeting is scheduled forJanuary 5th, 2011dinner at6 P.M. and to follow with business7 P.M.at the Dolce Vita Italian Restaurant, 2401 Colony Crossing PlaceMidlothian, VA 23112
