Work Smarter, Not Harder

September 14th, 2006

Setting and reaching goals can be one of the most rewarding parts of life.  The hopes, the struggles, and the accomplishment represent a vacillating ride of emotion that is at the essence of life itself.

I see a lot of young entrepreneurs set wise, achievable goals, that simply take too long to complete - and not for lack of effort.  The issue lies in how the entrepreneur is working.  It is very easy to get caught up in a low priority task that sends us around and around with no real productivity.  It happens to everyone.  In fact, it happened to me yesterday.  I decided it was time to hook-up another laptop to my wireless internet connection to boost productivity in my workspace.  My workspace is pretty efficient as it was, but this seemed like it would make my life a little easier.  In any event, I ended up spending over two hours trying to get my laptop onto my secure network with no real success (found out it was time to junk the old router, though).
The reality is that everyone gets stuck in this type of trap at some point.  Entrepreneurs are especially susceptible to it, because we lack a task manager or other corporate structure to keep us in line.  Simply, it is more a matter of prioritizing and working efficiently - well duh, it seems obvious enough to say, but is much harder in practice.  Lifehack  posted a great article (the impetus for this post) that discusses this issue and some ways to work around it, I found it well worth the read.
